Basically I’m very interested in trying out Formula Vee for some races in the 2014 season.
In terms of my experience, I’ve done some go-karting in the past and some single seater experience days.
I’m looking at perhaps arranging a trial day with someone to see how I fair, I’ll be coming to the 750 Motor Car Club event at Brands Hatch on the 26/27 April, and I would love to come around the paddock to have a chat but I don’t know who to approach.
In terms of what I’m looking for is perhaps to start of with arrive and drive, then move to an owner driver service once I’ve purchased a car.
Any feedback on starting out would be appreciated!
I’ve read the getting started guide and found it very useful.
First of all don’t be daunted by getting involved – there are lots of people willing to help! Your background’s similar to mine, and your plan is reasonable enough. I skipped the trial day and bought a car so that I had a bit more to spend on the car though.
Please say hello to as many of us at Brands as you can. There are lots of teams doing trial days including BEARS, AHS, Centurion, Andy Storer (Scarab) plus some I’ve probably forgotten. Have you had a look at our “Starting Out in Formula Vee” pack?
Thanks for getting in touch I really appreciate it.
I’ll make sure to pop round and speak to as many people as possible at Brands Hatch.
Yep, I’ve had a read of the starting out pack, just what I needed really it cleared up alot of things I was wondering about!
When you first started out did you store the car yourself and transport it to the circuits etc or did you leave it with a team?
I’m trying to figure out which way to go, currently I don’t have access to a garage, or a decent enough car to tow a trailer around, so I would have to look into garage rental and a towing car+trailer purchase.
Not sure what is the best approach in terms of costs, any advise?
I was in the same boat as you when starting – nowhere to keep the car, etc. I was lucky that the owner of the car I bought was willing to store the car for me in return for a bottle of wine or 2, and help out with prep. Whereabouts are you from? It might be that somebody might have space and be able to help you.
In terms of cost, just spend what you can afford – theres no point spending all your budget on the car, as you won’t have money to race it! You can get a very good starter car for about £4k, and if your patient and shop around a race winning car for about £7.5 to 8.5K. Ben Anderson’s black GAC is available, as is Glynn Davis AHS Challenger. Peter Andrews is rebuilding the old O-Sport Sheane……not sure if there are many others.
Hi guys, I’m based in South West London at the moment so I’ll have a nose around to see if anyone participating lives locally (ish).
And thanks for the info on cars for sale Ben, I’ll chase up on those leads before next weekend.
Looking forward to Brands! I’ll make sure to swing by and say hello to you both in the paddock.
